Abuse of Over-the-Counter Drugs
Over-the-counter cold and cough medicines containing the drug dextromethorphan (DXM) are also commonly abused. DXM comes in syrups, gels and tablets. Powdered DXM sold online poses a high risk because the potency is uncertain. It is found in over 100 cough and cold products, Coricidin, Delsym and Robitussin being the most abused.

- Hallucinations
- Hyperexcitability
- Insomnia
- Lethargy
- Physical dependence (with prolonged use)
- Paranoia
- Dizziness
- Slurred speech
- Delusions
- Sweating
- High blood pressure
- Liver and brain damage
Mixed with other drugs or by itself, DXM depresses the action of the brain and nervous system, which can interfere with breathing and the functioning of the heart. Large doses can cause a loss of consciousness, seizures, brain damage or death. DXM is particularly dangerous when combined with alcohol.
